ETHERNET

Ethernet usually refers to cable and is the most widely-used local area network ( LAN) technology.
Specified in a standard, IEEE 802.3, Ethernet was originally developed by Xerox from an earlier version called Alohanet. Ethernet was named by Robert Metcalfe.
In 1985, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in the United States of America, made a series of standards for Local Area Networks (LANs) called the IEEE 802 standards.
Comparisons of some Ethernet types. distances are in meters.

Type -Cable -Min length between nodes -Max Segment length -Max overall length

10-Base2- Thinnest -0.5 -185- 925
10-Base5- Thicknet -2.5- 500- 2500
10-Base-F Fiber -2000
10-Base-T UTP- 2.5 -100
